By eating the right foods — and avoiding the wrong ones – you can minimize inflammation

Understanding Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis

Diverticulosis is when your colon has tiny bulges or pockets (diverticula). You may not even know you have this condition. If you’re not careful about what you eat, tiny seeds and nuts can get trapped in these pockets, which can lead to diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis is when the pockets get inflamed (swell) and get infected. When this happens, it can be painful, and cause nausea, fever, and more. This condition is much more serious and potentially dangerous.

How common is diverticulosis?

If you don’t eat a lot of beans, nuts, veggies, fruits, and grains high in fiber, you’re more likely to be diagnosed with diverticulosis as you age. It affects just 10% of people over age 40, but 50% of people over age 60, and almost everyone over age 80.
